I chose The Puget Sound Blood Bank as my platform because I wanted to raise awareness in my community about blood donations and the fact that it can save lives. I wasn't aware of how important it was to donate until I was old enough to donate and found out more information. Just one pint can save three lives. Now I donate every eight weeks and try to bring friends and family with me so that we can save more lives as a community.

When I was younger I never I would have to suffer with any mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, bipolar, or an eating disorder. I was such a happy kid who loved my body. I used to think that people who suffered from those disorders especially eating disorders were crazy and strange, and that they thought they were fat and since I didn't that could never happen to me. But years later I learned that i was completely wrong. Eating disorders are not about thinking you are fat, their is greater hidden inside issue; usually a control issue, a need for control in a life that you cannot control. The 2 or 3 years I have suffered with this. I actually don't know how long, it is something that comes upon you weather you know it or not. My platform is to raise awareness about this. To help those who don't want to get help, or know how to, or who just simply don't want help because they don't want to lose their control. or who are scared people will judge them and think they are crazy for having something that they cannot help. They did not choose that life! I wont others who are not suffering to know that. I especially want to get to those who are in the early stages of it. They think that it cant hurt them, maybe not yet but if you don't get help soon it can turn into an addiction, and it can become almost impossible to help. It will cause a lot of health issues maybe even death. The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) puts on walk-A-Thons. To raise awareness and to have a place where people can go and feel comfortable with there imperfections, because nobody is perfect, and a lot of people (me included) try to be perfect even when it is physically impossible. I am going to go to health classes to talk to people about eating disorders. It is very important to talk to high schools especially 9th grade (which health is in). that is the age where everyone is trying to fit in and be "cool." So far I have it arranged that I am going to go to Academy Northwest, and Hopefully after that Kingston and maybe North and Crosspoint Academy. I am also a Zumba instructor, so I am thinking about taking NEDA's idea of a Walk-A-Thon, but making it a zumba party and charge money and give it to NEDA; in supporting them with helping with recovery for people. Honestly I don't know if I should be in this position where I am encouraging others to recover and get help when I myself have not recovered and am still as far into it as I ever was. But what has changed is that I have admitted it and am no longer denying it. I also still have trouble going to my counselor, and dietition, and agreeing that i want to change my lifestyle. And honestly I am not sure why I chose this for my platform. I think it is because I know what is like to suffer and I really want to help others in the same position. I guess I think that if I do it may help me recover also. As crazy as it seems I used to be jealous of those with strong eating disorders, because I thought that they were so skinny and in control of themselves. But now I feel very bad for them, I want to help them, and in return they may help me. I know fully support NEDA, and I hope to be someone others can come to and talk to for support.

Since I was young, I had always dreamed that someday I would change the world. I knew that my diligence would take me far, and that my dreams would some day open doors for me to help others across the country and around the world. My passion for disability awareness took me to Beijing, China this summer, where I spent three amazing weeks working alongside fellow teenagers to help disabled orphans. In the 21 days I spent in and around Beijing, I changed my life--and hopefully others, too. I was able to put a smile on the face of a child while we colored, practiced our English skills, and played soccer at the park. The children I met were the happiest, kindest, most excited people I've ever had the privilege of knowing. This experience changed me, and I hope to continue to change the world one day at a time. With Easter Seals Washington this year, I camped in Vaughn with both physically and intellectually disabled adults for a week where we rode horses, went canoeing, sang camp fire songs and so much more. This summer alone has made me all the more passionate about spreading the word on disabilities. Too often people are confused and afraid. These children and adults are just like us, just differently abled. My goals are continuing to grow, as I hope to influence my community by going into schools with Friends Who Care, and working alongside the R-word organization to Spread the Word to End the Word. It is incredibly important to me that the happiest people in the world are treated as people, too.

What am I doing to change the world?

I never thought at age 22 I would be a domestic violence statistic. I didn't know the warning signs or the red flags. I didn't know who to turn to or who to ask for help. My closest friends, family and roommates knew something was "off" but I ignored them. I believe teaching youth the absolute basics of healthy dating is SO important and needs to be in the classroom. I overcame something I never thought I would experience and I am more positive and optimistic as ever. There is a program called Respect Works and it is something I am educating myself about and plan to take it to the local elementary schools and junior highs to get the ball rolling. It's such an underreported topic and it seems so taboo, but it needs to be bought to the attention of..everyone. My fire to strive to make domestic violence known and talked about is so strong, I think about it everyday. Start local, think global. Domestic violence DOES happen, and it will continue to happen if programs and curriculums are not taught to future generations.

Brittney is one girl you don't want to miss!

What am I doing to change the world? Such a big question-through my not-for-profit organization, I get to see kids EVERYDAY learn how they can change the world, and then I get to SEE them DO IT. Through Kid University (www.kiduniversity.info), students of every age get the chance to get involved and make an impact, however big or small. It's thrilling when a child finds a way to serve their community that makes them FEEL GOOD. An artist gets to paint a mural at the park; a skateboarder gets to give a free lesson to other skateboarders; a baker gets to bake goodies for a homeless shelter at Christmas. A friend once told me her way of being a leader is leading by example, and I find that I get to do this on a day to day basis, and it bleeds over into the lives of Kid University students. Right now, we're just in Washington state, but one day, I know Kid University will be nation-wide program that has thousands and thousands of students involved, from elementary school to high school. So, to answer your question-I'm changing the world by helping others learn how THEY can change the world.

We use some many things that can not be broken down easily, but some could be reused. There are many alternatives to things that are used in daily life if we would just take the time to do it. It takes 50 years for one diaper to decompose. If moms took the time to use cloths diapers and then wash them it would free up room in landfills. The bad thing is that they are expensive. i want to raise money to help out those that do not have the money to buy the reusable items that would help save our environment.

Congratulations, Brittney!
I believe that anyone and everyone can help change the world. People who are passionate and inspired to help can make a real difference in other's lives.
Currently, I am working with 30 Hour Famine through World Vision to create a community-wide 30 Hour Famine. The Famine usually consists of youth at schools and churches gaining sponsorship to go for 30 hours without food. Not only does the money raised go directly to sponsoring kids in need around the world, the youth get the opportunity to experience hunger firsthand. Such an experience can change their own perspectives of life and inspire them to continue helping others in need.
This fall, I will be traveling around my community to inspire youth to participate in the Famine. My dream is that every student at every school, every youth group at every church, and even entire youth sport's teams would participate in this Famine.
At the end of the Famine, I hope to hold a "Hunger Banquet," where those who participated in the Famine can buy tickets to come and eat, as well as learn more about world famine and other ways they can help make a difference.
"Every 8 seconds a child dies of hunger." That's not just another statistic. It's a fact, and it's one that we can change. I can't wait to help inspire other youth to help make that change!
